BOM Nail Art Jan :: Daisies :: Born Pretty Store Review :: Floral Handle Brush Set

Today’s prompt for BOM Nail Art Jan is Daisies!  While I’m not really a flowers kind of gal, I do love vintage and retro floral prints, which is why I was drawn to these flower handled nail art brushes from Born Pretty Store.

This brush set comes in a set of four, with one flat brush and three different length striper brushes. The flat brush has a wooden handle with a standard silver paintbrush type tip and painted gold end, whereas the stripers appear to be a plastic barrel, with a more “pen nib” shaped tip in gold, and a matching gold end cap.  All brushes have the bristles secured well, and they are nice and light.
As there are two types of barrel used for these brushes, the floral print does look slightly different.  The plastic barrel of the stripers give a glossy look to the purple and pink floral print, and the gold detail flashes and shines as you move the barrel.  The print on the flat brush however, has a more matte look, which is understandable as it has been printed on a white painted barrel.  The gold detail is duller and you can notice the printing dots more if you look closely.  I had accidentally scratched off a section of print from the plastic ones, so I tested the wooden barrel with the same pressure and it didn’t damage the print as much.
I tested the brushes with acrylic paint only, as I intend to keep them for paint, not polish use.  I trialled white, black, medium yellow and yellow ocre acrylics (Reeves and Jo Sonja’s) and found that the brushes retained a slight stain from the bright yellow, but the other colours washed straight out.  I have found that it is fairly common for white brushes to discolour on the first use, even if you prime them with oil, so this is not something to be concerned about.  Below is a little sample of the lines produced by the brushes, with the flat brush obviously being at the top.  The other brushes were used from longest to shortest going left to right.  I didn’t see any noticeable difference other than the longer brush being easier to get the thinnest line more uniform.
On to the nail art!

Now keep in mind, this is actually my ugly step-sister hand (ie. my dominant hand was the one being painted).  I really have no idea why I decided to do this, other than the fact that the nails were already polished and I could just dive straight into it.  Although to be honest it’s not surprising, is it?  Lazy Lacquerista? 😉
Over my base of Femme Fatale Cosmetics Gentlemen’s Scuffle and Nightsong Grotto, I painted simple daisies using acrylic paint, and placed a few white dots around the daisies to help tie the nail art together with the base colour and glitters.
The verdict?  These brushes work well with acrylic paint, are light and quite easy to handle, and they look pretty too. The bristle quality is on par with other good nail art brushes in the same price range, and I was happy to add them to my brush collection.  I have not tested them using polish, so if this is your intention you may receive a different result than I did.

This brush set is currently available for US $3.44 (AUD $4.29) from Born Pretty Store, which works out to US $0.86 per brush (approx. AUD $1.07 each).  If you order over $10, you can also use my discount code for 10% off.  The code is LL10K31 (that’s a zero, not an Oh).

Born Pretty Store offers worldwide free postage, and on average I have found that it takes 4-6 weeks to receive items.  There are options for expedited shipping if you need something faster.

Happy Polishing!

Bring on 2015 :: BOM Nail Art Jan :: Femme Fatale Cosmetics Gentlemen’s Scuffle and Nightsong Grotto

Now that the end of year madness is behind me, it’s time to get my finger(s) out and get stuck back into nail art.  I was contemplating what to put on my nails when I stumbled upon a nail art challenge for January being hosted by three great IG nail ladies, @babsnails, @oliviajade19 and @m_a_tom. It’s also totally do-able at a mani every 4 days (for those of us who paint on the day).
Day 1 – New Year’s Day

I used two polishes from Femme Fatale Cosmetics for my mani, putting down two coats of the teal holo Gentlemen’s Scuffle, then stealing the glitters from Nightsong Grotto for glitter placement for the “2015”.  On my thumb, and for my ugly step-sister hand, I just applied a thin coat of Nightsong Grotto over the entire nail, making the glitters sparse on purpose as I liked the look (and also it won’t be such a cow to remove!).

I included an up-close shot of my “2” as this was the one I was happiest with.  There are so many lovely glitters in Nightsong Grotto!

This mani is actually pulling triple duty, as it is also a belated “New Years Eve” for Aussie Nails Monday, and my entry into the weekly challenge of “Free Choice” in the Femme Fatale Cosmetics’ Facebook group.
If you’d like to join in on January’s BOM nail art challenge, click on this image on my IG account @lazylacquerista and follow the hashtag #bomnailartjan.

Colour Blocking Nail Art :: Femme Fatale Cosmetics :: Mr Pinchy, Gossamer Dust and Gentlemen’s Scuffle

A lot of our Aussie Indie brands have their own fan groups on Facebook, and regularly run challenges.  I am unable to join in on a lot of them due to lack of time, however I had just enough time to sneak a mani in before last night’s cut-off on Femme Fatale Fiends‘ Colour Blocking theme.
I did a haphazard random design with striping tape over base coat as time was a factor, and lack of time doesn’t blend with precision very well 😉  I told myself I wanted to try out the “negative space” effect to see whether I liked it or not.  It was more the fact that I was quite tired from a busy day and didn’t want to wait for a coat of colour to dry properly…. [lazy]

Due to the use of striping tape, I wanted to use my more ‘solid’ type FFC colours as opposed to the glitters.  I went with Gossamer Dust (yellow/orange thermal with a blue/green shimmer), Gentlemen’s Scuffle (shimmery teal holo) and one of my favourite polishes from Femme Fatale Cosmetics, Mr Pinchy.  That delightful apricot/pink holo shifter.
I forgot how absolutely gorgeous Mr Pinchy is, and the name makes me smile every time.  If you don’t have this polish, and have the opportunity to pick it up pre-loved, do so, as unfortunately Mr Pinchy has been discontinued and is no longer available from FFC.

My ugly stepsister hand has a random skittle of these colours, but is not pictured because she’s shy (and I forgot to take a photo).  I think I like the look of the negative space, and it was nice not to have to worry about ruining my mani if the striping tape pulled up my base colour.  I wasn’t too keen on the visible nail line at first, but it is very hard to notice during normal use of your hands.  Sometimes we forget that people don’t see our hands in extreme closeup, and those little errors and problems we thing are glaringly obvious won’t be noticed by a majority of the population.

So, do you have a favourite Femme Fatale polish?  Is it as awesome as Mr Pinchy is?
Happy Polishing!!

Femme Fatale Cosmetics :: Darkmoon Fortune

Today I’m sharing Darkmoon Fortune from Femme Fatale Cosmetics, which was the polish I wore for last week’s glitter theme for Femme Fatale Fiends.

Darkmoon Fortune has a sheer plummy brown base, and is packed with a delicious mix of burgundy/brown hexes and small glitters, a purple/fuchsia in holo hexes and small squares, small turquoise holo hexes, and small iridescent glitters.  I may have the colour of the little squares wrong, as they seem to move from wine to fuchsia in light.

I applied two coats of Darkmoon Fortune over Color Club Electronica, which is a shimmery deep purple.  I found it incredibly difficult to get an accurate shot of the glossy version of this mani, so I applied a matte topcoat so that you could see just how generous the glitter serving is.
DMF was a hidden gem in my collection, and I’m sorry that it took so long to wear it. It is an absolutely gorgeous mix of glitters, and is now probably one of my favourite shades from FFC.  Unfortunately for those of you who do not own it, this shade has been discontinued although some fingerwork revealed that it is still available from FFC Stockists Beauty So Fly and Norway Nails.
AIPAS, as well as some of the Aussie Indie brands, have quite active Facebook fan groups, and often have themes to join in on. If you’re at a loss about which polish to put on, check out the different groups for inspiration!

Dragon Egg :: Femme Fatale Cosmetics Planar Anomalies and Twilight Meteorite

As you might have seen, I’ve been suffering from Lack-of-Internet-Itis for the last week of my holidays.  The sudden onset of this problem left me with plenty of time to finally try out the nail polish dragon egg made from painted thumb tacks.

After lining up my thumb tacks on an old postpac box, I applied two coats of black polish to each tack.  I had the agonising decision of what colours to use, finally going with two of my neglected Femme Fatale Cosmetics namely Planar Anomalies and Twilight Meteorite.  I laid down a rough coat of Planar Anomalies to get some texture and holo glitter on my scales, then topped it off with one coat of Twilight Meteorite to give it the gorgeous purple to blue shift.  Finishing off with a good quality top coat (not fast-drying) to help prevent any chipping, I waited until they were dry before assembling the egg.
I left each coat to dry for at least half a day to 24 hours before starting the next coat to make sure everything was fully dry and would last as long as possible.  I had the fun job of sticking small sharp objects into a weirdly shaped piece of styrofoam, which was consistently shifting weight as I added more tacks.  You need to take a little bit of care when wrangling your tacks that you cover up all that pesky white, which sticks out like dog’s proverbials when using dark tacks.  I wish now that I had painted the egg with black acrylic paint first so that the gaps would be less noticeable as you turn it around.
This little egg takes up quite a bit of polish, and I would estimate I used just over a third of a bottle of Covergirl Black Diamond for the two coats of base colour.  The tacks give the egg a nice weight to it, and the texture is lovely if you’re into the tactile side of life, which I am.  (Give me a clean, warm and well-worn t-shirt to bury my face in, and I’m in heaven).
While my glittery purple dragon bumnut is not perfect, I’m really happy with how this turned out, and I’ll definitely be making another one as a gift for someone as I think they’re pretty cool.
If you are considering tackling this, make sure you leave enough space to be able to paint each tack separately.  I found I had put my tacks too close together and had some accidental polish deposits on other tacks than the one I was trying to paint.  It will also let you see whether you have properly covered the whole surface of the tack.  There were a couple of tacks that I had missed the edge of or that the coats were thin, but you can easily hide these by spinning the tack to make sure it is covered over with the next layer of tacks, but it is easily avoided if you give yourself enough room to paint.
I loosely followed the Dragon Eggs tutorial done by Accio Lacquer, as I already had a fair idea of what to do from my ghosts of crafting past, and the fact that this was not my first foray into egg/bauble-type creations.  If you haven’t attempted anything like this before, or you like to chuckle at funny gifs, definitely check out Accio’s tutorial.
I tried to find some Game of Thrones or Mother of Dragons art to share with you, however my Google searches kept bringing up a plethora of dirty-faced blondes in Daenerys  cosplay with stuffed dragons crazy-glued to their chests, and a whole lot of weird paitned naked people.  I did stumble across the above meme that made me chuckle, and I simply have to share the Pugs of Westeros video.  It’s just too cute, and pugs are awesome.

Femme Fatale Swatch :: Gentlemen’s Scuffle and Spindleweb

I recently received Femme Fatale’s Gentlemen’s Scuffle and Spindleweb as part of a gift group I’m in with some fantastic ladies through Facebook.  I also have a wedding to attend shortly and I was tossing up between which of these polishes to wear to match my dark green heels.
As I was also joining in on The Crumpet’s “Simples Nail Art Muggle to Mastery”, with week one being “The Accent Nail“, I used this as an excuse to try both at once!

Gentlemen’s Scuffle is a smooth teal linear holo and was opaque at two coats.  I have a soft spot for dark teals, as they tone down the red skin flare ups I get from time to time.  I believe this elegant gentleman joined FFC around January this year, and should still be readily available in the core range.

Spindleweb consists of green, teal, dusky purple and blue glitters in a variety of sizes, together with some small dark purple glitters in a shimmery teal green jelly.  Glitter distribution is great, with no fishing for the large hexes.  Spindleweb has been in the FFC line since May 2013, however I can’t remember it being discontinued off the top of my head..
Femme Fatale Cosmetics will be reopening on 22-28th May, dates are estimated due to their recent relocation.  You can keep up to date on what’s happening at the FFC Facebook page.
I’m so happy to be able to transfer these two beauties off my want list and onto my stash list.  What’s your favourite teals?  A girl can never have enough teal polish 😉

Happy polishing!

What’s In-Die Box May 2014 Swatches :: True Bloody Beauty!

PART 2 – THE SWATCHES*** Spoiler Alert ***

If you haven’t received your WIDB yet, and want the contents to remain a surprise, you may want to avert your eyes now!

The theme for the May What’s In-Die Box was True Blood, in homage to the upcoming last season of HBO’s True Blood series.  The brands participating this month were Peita’s PolishGlam PolishLilypad LacquerDead Set Babes and for the first time, Femme Fatale Cosmetics.Tonight I’m sharing with you some swatches which I didn’t have the time (or the sunshine) to do with my previous post.  If you’re after more information about the polishes, and in-the-bottle shots, check out my first post here.

True Bloody Beauty

Femme Fatale Cosmetics – Sookie

Definitely the most feminine polish out of the bunch this month, Femme Fatale’s creation is a sheer nude shimmer-splosion with a delicate pink shimmer, generous amount of sheer golden flakes and just a hint of holo glitter, and I’m reminded of Sookie’s bursts of fairy fire.  Generally I’m not a fan of  don’t prefer sheers on general, but I can definitely see myself wearing this again as it was so delicate and shimmery.

Peita’s Polish – All flavour No bite

This shimmery cool red is chock full of glitter dust and fires off the occasional flash of fuschia amongst the glitters (but this was under a lighted magnifying glass!).  It has great depth and applied like a dream too, with one of the smoothest finishes I’ve seen in a while.

Glam Polish – Ciao Bitches

Wow.  Even in the shade, this polish inspired by the character Lafayette Reynolds has so much fabulous it hurts.  This grey/black based holo has all manner of different coloured rainbow holo glitters in it.  I’m not exaggerating either, as I was jotting down my notes at my desk in my little computer cave, with block out curtains except for a 20cm gap allowing the morning light in through frosted glass and security screens, this polish was still sparkling like mad.  This polish is a wee bit thirsty, but we all know rainbows love to get wet and I would recommend a second coat of topcoat of Ciao Bitches to give you a nice even look in low light.

Dead Set Babes – Eric in Chains

This super shiny silver linear holo from Dead Set Babes is a Dead Set Blinder!  I applied two coats to banish the VNL, and Eric stays a lovely chrome silver until that light makes it shoot those holo rainbows we love so much.

Dead Set Babes also included a sample of their new vinyl nail decals, with nine blood red vampire lip decals so I tried one out on my swatch.  They were stapled to the card, if you didn’t discover it yet, go digging through your box!

The only thing I was disappointed about was that it didn’t come with an actual Eric, in chains, for me to have my way with.  My wicked, wicked, way. 😉

Lilypad Lacquer – I love the Smell of Nail Polish in the Morning

This polish was a little bit of a surprise, as the flakes were quite prominent in the bottle, but were more subtle on the nail.  The metallic blue base contains some scattered holo glitters and large iridescent flakes.  These were more pronounced in the bottle, but blend in well on the nail to give off some super shine.

Next month’s What’s In-Die Box is available for pre-order from Peita’s Polish now for $49.95 until 12pm on Saturday 31 May.  The theme is 1st Anniversary Holo Box, and 10 lucky boxes will find a one of a kind polish made by one of the brands.

What was your favourite from this month?

What’s In-Die Box May 2014 :: A monthly box of polish goodness

*** Spoiler Alert ***

If you haven’t received your WIDB yet, and want the contents to remain a surprise, you may want to avert your eyes now!

The theme for the May What’s In-Die Box was True Blood, in homage to the upcoming last season of HBO’s True Blood series.  The brands participating this month were Peita’s Polish, Glam Polish, Lilypad Lacquer, Dead Set Babes and for the first time, Femme Fatale Cosmetics.
Time for the Bottle Piccies!!

What did the brands have in store for us this month?  As usual, I will try to describe the polishes as best I can.  I haven’t had time to do swatches tonight, and I’ve had some nasty breaks this past weekend.  I do plan on updating this post with swatch sticks and/or my 5-finger quickie swatch on Friday evening.
Peita’s Polish – All flavour No bite

All flavour No bite is a berry red shimmery glitter infused polish which was inspired by the beverage of choice by all vampires in Bon Temps, the synthetically nutritious True Blood.  The red jelly base has red, possibly a copper/gold glitter dust, a little touch of holo and some pink flakes.

Glam Polish – Ciao Bi#%$es

Ciao Bitches was based of the loveable Lafayette, and is a delicious shimmery rainbow glitter soup of fabulousness swimming around in a black almost purplish base and it really comes alive with some light.
Lilypad Lacquer – I love the smell of nail polish in the morning
I don’t actually like the smell of nail polish in the morning (and oh lordy painting my nails first thing, while I’m still half asleep?  My motor skills are terrible!)  but apparently Jason Stackhouse does!  I’m a little unsure how to describe this polish, as it’s quite bold.  The base is a bright blue metallic foil, with a generous serving of scattered holo glitters, and large iridescent flakes.  I can’t wait to see this one in full sunlight to see how much it punches me in the eye.
Dead Set Babes – Eric in Chains
I’ll take Eric any which way, in a suit, in a tracksuit, naked, tied up by ropes, not tied up at all…. but Dead Set Babes has brought him to us in chains this month, with a metallic silver foil linear holo, and possibly some small glass flecks (I kept getting distracted while staring at the linear holo with a lighted magnifying glass).  Eric in Chains also came with 9 bright red fanged lips vinyl nail decals.  I was hoping to try DSB’s vinyl nail decals soon, so I’m really happy a little sample was included with this polish.
Femme Fatale Cosmetics – Sookie
The inspiration for Femme Fatale’s contribution to this month’s box is self-explanatory, but I have to say it was a really pleasant surprise.  Sookie is a delicate and feminine polish, with a shimmery cream base with a pinkish shift and golden hued glass fleck.  The polish is quite sheer, and would be fantastic for a natural look, or to spice up another colour with a blast of fairy power.
What’s Coming Next Month?
June’s WIDB is a special Birthday edition, and is the first all holo box.  There is also some one of a kind polishes made by each brand which will be scattered amongst the boxes, so there will be some lucky people getting an extra surprise in their box next month.  What’s In-Die Box can be ordered from Peita’s Polish.  Unfortunately, my budget is going to prevent me buying next month’s box, but I did make it all the way through a year without skipping one!
Finally, Freya gave the True Blood What’s In-Die Box her scowl of approval.
Happy Polishing!

Femme Fatale Cosmetics Swatch :: Jadefire over Gossamer Dust

Today I’m sharing with you something old, and something new from Femme Fatale Cosmetics! Both of these polishes are still available, however one is discontinued so you might want to get a wriggle on if you like it.
The “something old” is FFC’s Jadefire, a rather unique blend of red, pink, holo green and lemon glitters all fighting for supremacy in a sheer golden green polish with a hint of pink shimmer.  Jadefire has been discontinued so once the current stock sells out, you will lose your chance.
The “something new” is Gossamer Dust, a citrus lover’s dream thermal, which morphs from a delicious buttery lemon when warm to a peachy orange when cold, all with a light turquoise shimmer.

I applied two coats of Jadefire over Gossamer Dust, because I was interested to see how the different thermal states of GD would change the colour of Jadefire.  Above, the mani shows Gossamer Dust in it’s warm buttery lemon state.  The photo below shows my nails after I swirled them around in an icebath to change GD into it’s cool orange state.  Unfortunately the photos showing a half transition weren’t in focus so I have nothing to show you for the half-way mark.  I always find thermals so much fun to wear, but not so easy to capture since it’s always so freakishly hot where I live! If you are after a stronger colour change when recreating this mani, I would suggest only using one coat of Jadefire so that Gossamer Dust has more opportunity to come through.

When I first saw that Jadefire was being released, oh so long ago, I knew I had to have it for my collection because it reminded me so much of my favourite joke when I was a kid.  I guess this post wouldn’t be complete without sharing it with you, so here it is.
What’s green and red and lies in the gutter?
Wounded Snot

I was such a charming young lady, wasn’t I?

If you’re interested in seeing Gossamer Dust by itself, check out my previous review here.  Also, if you want to see Jadefire flying solo, here is the link to Theresa’s review on It’s All About the Polish.

Femme Fatale Cosmetics Swatch :: Gossamer Dust

Femme Fatale Cosmetics recently released some new colours, and I took the opportunity to snag their summery thermal, Gossamer Dust.

Gossamer Dust is a summery thermal, shifting from a gorgeous lemon while hot to a delicate apricot when cold, with a delicate green shimmer at all times. The formula is fairly sheer, so you will need to build up those layers for opacity.  I am wearing three coats in these photos.
At “rest”, Gossamer Dust in it’s warm state, although you can see the bottle is a little colder and is mid-transition.
For the above photo I swirled my nails around some cold water to get a half peach/half yellow.
And at full “cold” colour, a gorgeous peachy orange.
I’m definitely going to be pulling this one out again in winter.  I love the citrus colours, and it would definitely brighten up a dreary winter day.
You can purchase Gossamer Dust from Femme Fatale Cosmetics via their website, and stay up to date by following them on Facebook, or join the Femme Fatale Fiends group.

AIPAS Weekly Challenge and Aussie Nails Monday :: Femme Fatale Crimson Acolyte

I’ve been super busy this week with work and organising my giveaway, and a night of floating in the pool with not a care in the world.  I’ve finally taken the time to paint my nails for the AIPAS weekly challenge, which was SHINY!!  As luck would have it, my shiny also ticks the box for tomorrow’s Aussie Nails Monday, so I’m going to be a Cheaty McCheaterson and use this mani for both!  Lazy is in my blog name, so this shouldn’t come as a shock 😉
I was lucky enough to receive a deliciously sparkly Crimson Acolyte mini with an order from Femme Fatale Cosmetics some time this year.  I’ve used it a couple of times and I still have oodles left in the bottle.  This polish has so much glitter in it, I couldn’t begin to describe it to you, but there’s reds and pinks, with purple and holo flashes.
Unfortunately Crimson Acolyte was discontinued and no longer available, but there are plenty of other treasures available at Femme Fatale Cosmetics.
